If you frequently commute across the U.S.-Mexico land border, waiting two hours in the blazing sun at the San Ysidro or Otay Mesa crossing is a brutal reality.
The Secure Electronic Network for Travelers Rapid Inspection (SENTRI) program is the ultimate solution. SENTRI allows pre-approved travelers to use dedicated, expedited lanes at Southern land border ports of entry, often reducing a multi-hour wait to just 15 minutes.
But how much does it actually cost? Historically, the SENTRI fee structure was notoriously complicated, involving application fees, fingerprint fees, and separate vehicle inspection charges.
Thankfully, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) overhauled the pricing. Here is the complete breakdown of the SENTRI pass cost and eligibility requirements for 2026.
The New 2026 SENTRI Cost Structure
In October 2024, CBP harmonized the fees for all Trusted Traveler Programs. The pricing for SENTRI is now straightforward:
The SENTRI pass costs a flat fee of $120.
This single $120 payment covers:
- Your application processing.
- Your background check and fingerprinting.
- A 5-year membership to the program.
- The registration of one vehicle.
No More Hidden Vehicle Fees
Under the old system, applicants had to pay an extra $42 to register their vehicle for use in the SENTRI lanes.
This separate fee has been abolished. The $120 fee now includes the registration of your primary vehicle. If you wish to register additional vehicles (up to a maximum of 4 per applicant), you can do so at no extra cost, though each vehicle must still be inspected and approved by CBP.
Note: The $120 fee is non-refundable. If your application is denied because of a past criminal conviction or a customs violation, you do not get your money back.
SENTRI vs. Global Entry Costs
With the new fee harmonization, SENTRI and Global Entry both cost exactly $120. So, which one should you choose?
If you intend to drive your car across the Mexican border, you must have your vehicle registered.
- SENTRI includes vehicle registration automatically.
- Global Entry allows you to use the SENTRI pedestrian lanes and airport kiosks, but if you want to drive your car through the SENTRI lane, you must manually register your vehicle on your Global Entry account (which is currently free).
If you are a Mexican citizen who only flies to the U.S. and never drives across the border, Global Entry is the better choice. If you commute by car daily, SENTRI is specifically designed for your needs.

Who is Eligible for SENTRI?
Unlike Global Entry, which is restricted to a shortlist of partner countries, SENTRI has no citizenship requirements.
U.S. citizens, U.S. lawful permanent residents, and all foreign nationals (including Mexican citizens) are eligible to apply.
However, all applicants must pass a rigorous background check. You will likely be disqualified if you:
- Have been convicted of any criminal offense or have pending criminal charges (including DUIs).
- Have been found in violation of any customs, immigration, or agriculture regulations in any country.
- Are the subject of an ongoing investigation by law enforcement.
Do Children Need Their Own SENTRI Pass?
Yes. Every single person in the vehicle must have their own active SENTRI pass. If a family of four drives up to the SENTRI lane, all four individuals (including infants) must present a valid SENTRI card.
The good news? Minors under the age of 18 can now apply for SENTRI for free, as long as a parent or legal guardian is already a member or is applying concurrently.
The Biggest Hurdle: The SENTRI Interview
If you meet all the requirements and pass the background check, you will receive "Conditional Approval."
To finalize your membership, you must schedule an in-person interview at an enrollment center (typically located right at the border crossings, like San Ysidro, Otay Mesa, or El Paso).
The problem? Appointments are nearly impossible to find.
Because of the massive demand for border crossing passes, interview appointments at Southern border enrollment centers are frequently booked out for 6 to 10 months in advance.
If you don't want to wait a year to start using the fast lane, use an appointment scanner like Appt Helper. You select your preferred border crossing (like San Ysidro), and our automated system checks the CBP schedule 24/7. When an applicant cancels their interview, we instantly send an SMS text alert to your phone with a direct booking link.
You can snipe a canceled slot and get your SENTRI pass months ahead of schedule. Stop waiting in the blazing sun and claim your fast pass today.
