The CBP Mobile App is supposed to be the fastest way through customs — when it works. When it doesn't, you're stuck staring at an error screen on the jetbridge with a customs queue forming rapidly behind you.
Because the app is relatively new and CBP iterates on it quickly, glitches and edge cases are common, yet official troubleshooting documentation is sparse.
Below is every common failure we have documented, organized by what you are seeing on your screen, and the fix that actually works. If your specific issue isn't listed here, you may need to contact the CBP Global Entry support line.
Profile Setup Problems
The app rejected my passport photo. What now?
The app uses strict optical character recognition (OCR) to read the Machine Readable Zone at the bottom of your passport data page. If there is glare from overhead lighting, or the image is slightly blurry, it will reject the scan. Place your passport flat on a plain background, stand directly over it under natural light to eliminate glare, and ensure the entire data page fills the frame without clipping the edges.
My KTN (Known Traveler Number) isn't being recognized.
This usually happens due to a typo or because your KTN was issued under a different spelling of your name than what the app sees on your passport. Verify your exact KTN by logging into the CBP TTP portal first, then re-enter it exactly as it appears in your official profile.
The profile selfie keeps failing the face match.
When you take your profile selfie, the app compares it to the original photograph CBP took during your Global Entry interview. If it has been years since your interview and you have changed your appearance significantly, the algorithm may fail. Try again in a very well-lit room with a plain background. If the issue persists across multiple days, you may need to schedule a renewal interview to update your CBP reference photo.
In-Flight / Pre-Landing Problems
The app can't find my flight.
The app's automatic flight detection relies on a database that sometimes lags behind schedule changes or struggles with complex layover routings. Fortunately, flight detection is completely optional. You can simply bypass the automatic search and manually select your arrival airport from the dropdown list.
"Connection error" — the app can't reach CBP.
This is the most common error travelers see upon landing. The app must communicate with CBP servers to process your face match. If you are connected to the airplane's in-flight wifi as you land, or to a weak terminal wifi network that blocks outbound API calls, the connection will fail. Turn off your wifi and switch entirely to your cellular data as soon as you touch down; the app will retry automatically.
The trip selfie keeps failing the face match.
Jetbridges and airplane cabins are notoriously poorly lit, casting harsh shadows that confuse the facial recognition system. Do not keep retrying in the dark. Step into an area with better overhead lighting, like the gate area or the terminal concourse, and retake the photo.
At-the-Airport Problems
I got the green check but the officer doesn't see my record.
Your digital receipt is valid for a 4-hour window. If your flight was heavily delayed after you submitted the photo, the receipt may have expired. Alternatively, you might be at a smaller airport where the lane officer's tablet has lost synchronization with the main server. In this case, simply show the officer the screenshot of your green check. If they reject it, proceed to the regular Global Entry kiosk.
There's no mobile lane at my airport.
The mobile app does not work at every airport yet. If you don't see a mobile lane, your airport likely isn't on the supported airports list. You must use the standard kiosk; the app receipt is not required and will not help you skip the line here.
The mobile lane is closed.
CBP often closes the dedicated mobile lanes during off-peak hours due to staffing shortages. If the lane is roped off, your regular Global Entry membership still works as always. Just use the standard kiosks instead.
App-Level Problems
The app crashes when I open it.
App crashes are usually tied to specific OS versions (such as recent iOS 17.x or Android system updates) conflicting with the app's camera permissions. The fastest fix is to uninstall the app completely, restart your phone, and reinstall it from the App Store or Google Play. If the issue persists, file a bug report via the app store reviews so the developers are aware.
The app says I'm not a Global Entry member, but I am.
This indicates a backend lookup failure by CBP, or a mismatch with how your KTN is stored in their system. Log into ttp.cbp.dhs.gov to confirm your membership is fully active (and not just conditionally approved). If it is active, re-enter the KTN exactly as shown in your dashboard.
My phone died right before I could open the app.
The app is an enhancement to Global Entry, not a strict requirement. If your phone is dead, simply use the physical kiosks.
Most Global Entry Mobile App issues fall into the categories above. If yours doesn't, CBP's Global Entry support line (the number is published in your TTP account dashboard) is the official path — though wait times are real.
Meanwhile, none of these app issues affect your underlying Global Entry membership — kiosks still work, and if your membership is in good standing, you'll get through customs either way.
What the app can't help with is getting Global Entry in the first place. Interview wait times at most enrollment centers are 4–9 months. Appt Helper monitors every center 24/7 and texts you the instant a slot opens.
